The disease occurs when cells similar to those found in the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus) grow outside the uterus, causing problems.

These tissues usually appear in the pelvic area, where they can attach to the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and outside of the uterus. In some cases, the tissue can also be found in other parts of the body. Symptoms of endometriosis include:

Severe cramps during periods

Increased menstrual flow

Pain during intercourse

Painful emptying of the bladder or bowel during periods

Pain on the back

Gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea, constipation and nausea

Treatment of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is the cause of infertility in 24%-50% of women diagnosed with it. In mild to moderate cases, infertility is often temporary. Surgical removal of the tissue can restore fertility. Despite surgeries that relieve symptoms, there is no definitive cure and symptoms may return.

Treatment of endometriosis may include:

Monitoring: If the symptoms are mild.

Hormonal therapy: Birth control pills, birth control patch or vaginal ring to control estrogen.

Hormone blockers: To stop the production of estrogen by the ovaries.

Infertility and Endometriosis

When treating infertility caused by endometriosis, the Reproductive Medicine Specialist may use surgery and IVF. Surgery can improve the chances of conception in mild to moderate cases and restore fertility even in severe cases. IVF is the best option for severe cases of endometriosis.

The causes of endometriosis

The exact causes of endometriosis remain unknown, but there are several hypotheses:

Genetic factors

Disorders of the immune system

Previous abdominal surgery

Hormonal imbalance

Ask for Endometriosis Help

Endometriosis research continues and there are many promising developments.
