WHAT IS GENETIC CARRIER TESTING?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

These are DNA tests that detect whether a person is carrier<\/strong> an underlying genetic disease. Usually, the carrier does not show any symptoms, however if both partners carry mutations in the same gene, then there is a significant risk of passing the disease on to the child.<\/p>\n

WHAT DISEASES CAN BE DETECTED?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The audit may include: specific genes<\/strong> or be done through extended panels<\/strong> with hundreds of diseases. The most common diseases that are checked are:<\/p>\n

    WHEN SHOULD GENETIC TESTING BE DONE?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The ideal time is before pregnancy<\/strong>, so that if an increased risk is identified, alternatives are available:<\/p>\n

    • Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-M)<\/strong> in vitro fertilization<\/li>\n
    • Egg or sperm donation<\/strong>, when required<\/li>\n
    • Prenatal testing with chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis<\/strong>, if the pregnancy has already begun<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
