Fertility is a complex process, involving many different body systems – and hormones play the most critical role. Hormonal control is a cornerstone in diagnosis fertility problems, as it can reveal imbalances that directly affect the ability to conceive, in both women and men.
Why is hormonal control so important?
Hormones regulate almost every stage of the reproductive process: ovulation, egg maturation, preparation of the uterus for implantation, and maintenance of pregnancy. Even small disturbances in hormone levels can significantly affect fertility. Hormonal control helps:
- ✅ to identify disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- ✅ assess ovarian reserve
- ✅ to diagnose thyroid or pituitary problems
- ✅ to design a personalized assisted reproduction plan
What tests does it include?
Hormonal testing for fertility usually involves blood tests in the first few days of the cycle (usually days 2-5). Some of the key hormones tested are:
- FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) – ovarian function index
- LH (luteinizing hormone) – related to ovulation
- Estradiol (E2) – shows ovarian activity
- AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone) – assesses ovarian reserve
- Prolactin – may affect ovulation
- Thyroid hormones (TSH, T3, T4) – thyroid disorders affect menstruation and pregnancy
- Testosterone and androgens – especially in cases of PCOS
In men, hormonal tests such as FSH, LH, testosterone and prolactin help to understand the cause of possible oligospermia or azoospermia.
When should hormonal testing be done?
Hormonal testing is recommended:
- ✅ for couples who have been trying to have a child for over 6–12 months without success
- ✅ in women with unstable or infrequent cycles
- ✅ before starting assisted reproduction (e.g. in vitro fertilization)
- ✅ for women over 35 years of age who wish to check ovarian reserve
Hormones and IVF Precise hormonal control is necessary for the success of in vitro fertilization. It allows for the appropriate adjustment of pharmacological stimulation, protocol selection, and prediction of ovarian response.
