5 MYTHS ABOUT STERILITY, IVF AND FERTILITY

5 MYTHS ABOUT STERILITY, IVF AND FERTILITY

5 Myths about infertility, in vitro fertilization and fertility

There are many misconceptions about fertility , the IVF and fertility treatments generally. "Myths of infertility are believed more often than not"except of the fertility community ”, but some of them are even believed by those trying to conceive.

Here is the truth behind 5 popular myths of infertility and fertility treatment.

1. Infertility is a female problem

Infertility is a human problem, not a female problem. Infertility occurs in both men and women.

In heterosexual couples experiencing infertility:

  • About a third will fight with her male infertility
  • Another third will fight with female infertility
  • The remaining third will either face male and female fertility problems either no cause will ever be found (unexplained infertility)

2. Infertility means that it is impossible to get pregnant on your own

THE infertility defined as the inability to conceive after one year of sexual intercourse without protection. When a woman does not become pregnant after one year, we can statistically say that the couple falls under the rule. We have reason to suspect that something may be wrong, even if we do not know what that "wrong" thing is.

However, people who have been diagnosed with infertility they can eventually capture without fertility treatments. The probability of this happening will depend due to their reduced fertility, their age and how long they have been trying. The chances may be very small - less than 1 percent in some cases - but they are not necessarily zero.

THE sterility is a different matter. If we say that a man or a woman is sterile, he or she is unable to conceive without medical help. Examples of this can be a man who has zero sperm count, also known as azoospermia. When a structural issue causes azoospermia and sperm can not enter the sperm, the man is sterile.

An example of female infertility can occur if both of a woman's trumpets are completely blocked. If the egg cannot reach the uterus (and the sperm cannot reach the egg), Pregnancy is impossible without the help of technology.

That does not mean that if you are infertile (but not sterile) that you should rely on these very unlikely to get pregnant. You will need to seek treatment if you want to conceive

3. Young men and women cannot be infertile

The older you are, the more likely you are to experience infertility. However, young men and women also face the same problem. Age-related infertility is only one possible cause of reduced fertility.

According statistics collected by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 9% of women aged 15 to 29 years report difficulty conceiving. For older women 30 to 34 years old, this percentage increases to 14%. For older women 40 to 44 year olds, 16 percent report difficulty to get pregnant or to become pregnant.

4. You do not have to worry about your age. There is always IVF

People postpone a pregnancy for various reasons. No one should rush to have children if they are not ready, but age is an important factor to be taken into account.

There is a common misconception that if the infertility age-related occurs, you can always do IVF. Things are not that simple. Just as your natural fertility decreases with age, your chances of success with IVF treatment also decrease with age.

According with statistics collected by the CDC , the 33% of in vitro fertilization cycles for women under 35 years led to the birth of a baby. For women aged 38 to 40 years, the success rate reduced by almost half, approximately at 17%. For older women 43 to 44 years old, birth rates per cycle it was only 3 percent.

5. If you already have a child, you do not need to worry about fertility

THE secondary infertility is when a couple finds it difficult to conceive since they already have a child in the past. Unfortunately, The previous success of the pregnancy does not guarantee the continued success of the fertility.

Things change with time and age. Sometimes, a new underlying medical condition. Sometimes, a situation of infertility that existed, is getting worse. So while it has not prevented pregnancy in the past, it has now become a problem.

Sometimes a previous pregnancy causes a new fertility problem. For example, surgical complications or postpartum infection can lead to scarring. This sign can lead to infertility.

REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

The association of IVF drugs with cancer risk is a major concern for women enrolled in these programs. But the plethora of bibliographic reports collected from credible scientific studies and published in reputable medical journals worldwide are reassuring and do not confirm this concern.

Of course not. In about a third of cases, infertility is due to the woman (female factor), while in a third of cases, it is due to the man (male factor). The remaining one-third is due to both (both men and women) or even to unknown factors.

The quantity and quality of a man's sperm can be affected by his health and lifestyle. Some factors that can reduce the quantity and / or quality of sperm are:

  • the alcohol
  • drugs
  • environmental toxins, including pesticides and lead
  • smoking
  • health problems
  • medicines
  • radiotherapy and chemotherapy
  • the age

Success rates vary at each IVF Center. Very important factors are also the age of the woman, the levels of her hormones and of course the sperm of the husband. Rates generally range from 45% or slightly higher for women up to 35 years old.

Infertility is defined as the failure to conceive after one year (or 6 months, if it is a woman over 35) with normal, regular sexual intercourse. In other words, when a year passes without the woman becoming pregnant, the couple should consult their doctor to determine the cause of the pregnancy and then treat it. We must all, however, be aware and not forget that the age factor is the most critical for female fertility and that the individualized approach of each couple is the "golden key" that solves the problem.

The number of treatment cycles a woman can undergo is not specified. It is certain that in our country there are high level obstetricians-gynecologists and organized infertility treatment centers, which offer impeccable medical services at this level. If there are correct indications (eg ovaries that respond to stimulation therapy, good quality endometrium, etc.) the success rate -especially with the use of newer techniques and biotechnological drugs, which show increased bioactivity compared to conventional drugs from urine- totals approximately 65%-70% after 4 cycles of treatment.

At the Center for Reproductive Medicine of Dr. Traianos we offer egg / sperm cryopreservation services for those who have a personal or medical reason and need this service. We use the most modern vitrification technique in the freezing of sperm and eggs.

The collection of eggs takes 10-15 minutes, it is not painful, it is done under intoxication and after the end of the process you return to your activities.

In general, experts agree that the fact that a couple has already had a child can be considered proof that there is no infertility problem in the first place. It is like a small test that has been done and proves that they "made it" at least once. On the other hand, however, we must be aware that things may have changed in the meantime and a problem may have arisen (e.g. the man may have suffered some inflammation, which affects the quality of his sperm or something has intervened that affects female fertility: an inflammation, a gynecological surgery, an abortion, etc.).

In any case, if a reasonable period of time (one year) passes and a couple is unable to achieve pregnancy, then they should, with the help of their doctor, investigate whether there has been a problem causing infertility.
