Eating chocolate during pregnancy can benefit the development of the fetus.
Good news for all expectant mothers out there: Consume 30 g of chocolate every day during pregnancy can benefit her fetal development. This is the conclusion of a study presented by Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Atlanta, GA
Consumption of 30 g of chocolate daily during pregnancy associated with development benefits of the fetus in the new study.
The results of the study are likely to be warmly welcomed by mothers, given that the long list of foods women are told to avoid during pregnancy, makes this period difficult in terms of nutrition.
While chocolate itself - thankfully - is absent from this list of prohibitions, expectant mothers are recommended not to overdo it due to its content of fat, sugar and caffeine.
However, there are many benefits which can occur with moderate consumption of chocolate. Chocolate contains flavanols - a type of flavonoid - attached with a reduced risk of cardiovascular problems and lower cholesterol. The darker the chocolate, the more flavanols it contains.
Previous studies have also shown that moderate chocolate consumption during pregnancy may reduce the risk of preeclampsia - where the blood supply to the fetus is reduced due to the high blood pressure of the mother.
However, the researchers note that the results of research evaluating the relationship between chocolate intake during pregnancy and preeclampsia were contradictory, prompting him and his colleagues to learn more.
