Needless to say, there are so many things to think about when trying to conceive. From what you should eat, to how often and when you should have sex, there's plenty of research to explain what you should be doing and why. However, even with the amount of information out there, you may not know much about the important connection between sleep and fertility. So it's time to learn more about how sleep can affect your reproductive potential and find tips to improve your sleeping habits.
Researchers believe that sleep and fertility are interconnected
We need to get enough sleep to make sure our bodies stay healthy and our minds functioning. Science backs up this claim, but until relatively recently, there hasn't been much focus on the sleep and fertility part. Some scientists, however, have begun to look into this area, and research seems to suggest an inextricable link. Inside the brain, there is a section that regulates the hormones responsible for the sleep-wake cycle. The same area also triggers the release of reproductive hormones in both men and women. As a result, lack of sleep can affect the release of an egg in women (ovulation) and the production of sperm in men. Thus, more difficulties are likely to arise during conception. On the contrary, when you take care of an adequate sleep, the reproductive processes are automatically strengthened, thus increasing the chances of a successful conception.
Improve your sleeping habits by following simple tips
So you know you need to get enough sleep when you're trying to conceive. But what if you're among the estimated one-third of people who are sleep-deprived? Our fertility experts provide advice to help you get more and better sleep. A great way to improve your sleep habits is to always have a regular bedtime and wake up time. If your mind starts racing with thoughts and obligations when you lie down to sleep, you may need to create a bedtime routine that includes relaxing activities an hour before bed. Most of us enjoy caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, but there should be a specific time for them. So, avoid consuming these types of drinks within five hours before bedtime. Finally, it is important to listen to your body and its needs. Some people need more (or less) sleep than others. Note how much rest you need to feel your best, and try to get that much each night to improve both your sleep and your fertility.
